Our mission at Carolina Integrative Medicine is to provide for the health, vitality and wellness of our patients. We strive to create a therapeutic relationship with our patients often described as Functional Medicine. We certainly treat patients with traditional diseases, but move beyond that focus to a more whole-system, patient-centered approach. We are looking not just at a set of isolated symptoms, but at the interactions among genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that influence long-term health and quality of life, as well as complex chronic disease.
One of the most important aspects of this functional or integrative approach to medicine is the use of therapeutic products known as nutraceuticals. This portmanteau of the words nutrition and pharmaceutical was coined 25 years ago in order to give identity to an area of health, medicine and research into natural substances that provide medical or health benefits including prevention and treatment of disease as well as providing general vitality. These natural substances are formulated to provide supplements to a basic diet which may be lacking in critical nutrients.
